Verizon Awards Literacy Grant to The Plymouth Public Library The Literacy Program at the Plymouth Public Library is pleased to announce the receipt of a grant from Verizon, a well-known supporter of literacy programs at a national and local level.

Bonnie Coughlin, Regional Director, Public Affairs for Verizon made the presentation of the $1,500 grant on January 15, 2002 at the library to Dinah O’Brien, library director and Mary Anne Odell, the coordinator of the literacy program. At that time, Ms. Coughlin expressed her acknowledgement and appreciation of the quality of the services provided by the Literacy Program to the Plymouth community. On February 26, 2002, the Literacy Program received an additional $6,500 from Verizon for 2002. The grant will be used to purchase a subscription for each volunteer tutor to “Hands On English,” an idea filled monthly publication, designed to suggest creative methods for planning practical English lessons. In addition, each learner in the program will receive a weekly newspaper called “News For You.” Learners will enjoy the top news of the week in an easy-to-read-format. Other features include crosswords puzzles, sports, lifestyle and Letters to the Editor.
